The Welder is one of the starting tools that players are given at the start of every new world loaded. It allows the player to assemble ship and station blocks from components, at the cost if using up their suits energy reserves.
The Welder’s secondary role is as part of the Hacking game mechanic.
For larger welding projects, use the ship-mounted Welder (Block).
Usage[]
- Make sure you have the Welder item in your inventory.
- Open the Toolbar config (press G) and assign the Welder Tool to a slot.
- Press the slot number to hold the Welder in your hand.
- RMB-click an incomplete block to search the player's inventory for any needed components and immediately add them to the construction stockpile.
- Click and hold LMB to add progress to construction while draining the player's suit power at an increased rate.
Progress can only be made if the stockpile has components available to supply the current step of construction. Each step must be completed in order, going from the bottom of the tooltip list to the top.
Shortcut[]
Double-LMB-click to switch the welder on (or off) without having to hold the mouse button pressed.
Use in Hacking[]
The act of welding computer components of a functional block assigns ownership, which is the reason this tool is also used for Hacking.
Use in Clearing the path[]
When non-functional blocks (typically armour blocks) get damaged, they deform. You can weld away some of the deformation without using components, which is useful when trying to traverse ruins or wrecks to clear the way.
Tool Upgrades[]
There are faster versions of the welder available. They can be built in assemblers if you have the required materials.
Below is a comparison of all four welders. Values for speed and energy consumed are tested on one heavy armor block at "realistic" speed and are all approximate. "Energy Used" is especially questionable because of the slow update speed of the suit's energy value on your GUI. Craft the Welder (Tool) from the Tools tab in the Assembler with the materials listed below. Material values in the recipes reflect the "Realistic" setting.
