The Small Reactor is an essential block in Space Engineers. It produces electrical power which is needed to operate most blocks. Solar Panels and Wind Turbines are other possible sources of energy.
Variants[]
It is important to note that this article discusses two reactor variants:
- Small Reactors for Large Ships (2.5m x 2.5m x 2.5m)
- Small Reactors for Small Ships (0.5m x 0.5m x 0.5m).
They are not to be confused with the Large Reactor variants.
Power output and Usage[]
The Small Reactor is 1/27th the size of a large reactor (1x1x1 instead of 3x3x3). The Small Reactor creates 500 kW on a small ship and 15MW on a large ship or station.
In Creative Mode, no ingots are used up to generate power; however, in Survival Mode, all reactors require Uranium Ingots. The large reactor is about 1.3 times more weight-efficient (MW/reactor-mass kg) on large ships. On a small ship, a large reactor produces about 1.6 times more power per kg of reactor mass than a small one.
Both sizes of reactors on both grid sizes produce 1 MWh / kg of Uranium Ingots.
The fact that the conveyor system requires power to start functioning means that a completely "dead" ship will require some other temporary source of power, or at least manual access to one reactor to feed it with uranium ingots, which starts the conveyor systems.
Inventory[]
With Realistic settings, the Small Reactor has an inventory with a capacity of 125 L for small ships and 1,000 L for large ships. The inventory only accepts the Uranium Ingots which fuel the reactor. If any of its inventory panels are attached to a powered conveyor system, the reactor will automatically pull ingots from valid inventories when it runs low.
Troubleshooting[]
If the Small Reactor does not produce any power, first make sure its inventory contains (or it's conveyored to an inventory containing) Uranium Ingots.
Second, ensure the Small Reactor is not the sole source of power on the grid: You will also need a Small Battery (or Solar Panel, connected other powered grid, etc.) to kickstart the conveyor system! Despite being a power producing block, the Small Reactor itself requires power to start up, this is because it depends on the conveyor system to pull fuel, and the conveyor system requires power to work.
