The Hand Drill is a tool in Space Engineers that can be equipped and used to detect ores, and mine ores including stone and ice.
Drilled Ores can be stored in Cargo Containers and processed at the Refinery into Materials which can be transformed into tools, ammo, and building components in the Assembler.
Power Usage[]
The Hand Drill is not as time effective a drilling tool as the vehicular Drills since it takes longer to mine manually. On the other hand, a hand drill depleting suit energy is much more energy efficient than a whole mining ship which consumes considerably more power.
Usage[]
When standing on the ground, you often have to crouch (press C) before the hand drill starts working against the ground near your feet.
LMB-click and hold to use its primary action which is mining stone, ore, and ice.
In contrast to a ship drill, the hand drill does not automatically collect ore, leaving ore chunks rolling or floating free to be collected by hand. To pick up dropped ores, you must target the chunks and press 'F'.
RMB-click and hold to use the secondary interaction to dig much larger holes but without mining any ore. This can be useful when building underground structures and tunnels, as it is much faster than any other form of drilling. Don’t use the secondary drill action if you intend to gain resources (like stone, ice, and ores), the digging mode will destroy any resources you encounter while tunnelling.
Double-LMB-click to switch the drill on (or off) without having to hold the mouse button pressed. Double-RMB-click to switch digging mode on (or off) without having to hold the mouse button pressed.
Detect ores[]
The Hand Drill has a built-in Ore Detector, allowing players to locate veins of ore at short ranges (20 metres) which is less than a ship mounted drill. Equip the hand drill while walking and keep an eye out for ore signals on your HUD. Upgrading the Drill does not increase detection range.
PvP[]
In PvP situations, the Hand Drill is nearly incapable of dealing damage to players. However it is useful in a combat situation for quickly making trenches on planets and hiding spots within an asteroid.
Assembly[]
There are three upgraded versions of the Hand Drill which mine increasingly faster than the standard Hand Drill. The Enhanced Hand Drill distinguishes itself from other Enhanced-level tools in that it does not need Cobalt. Craft the Hand Drill from the Tools tab in the Assembler with the recipes listed below. Material values in the recipes reflect the "Realistic" setting.
