The original Encounters were abandoned Ships and Stations that KeenSWH removed from game. They had a much higher spawn rate than the current Random Encounters.
The original encounters can be added back into the game thanks to Prof.Liebstrumpf's Original Encounters and Stations on the Steam Workshop Here is mod.io link for console users from Prof.Liebstrumpf
