New game scenario

How do I create a new game in Space Engineers and what options do I have?

  1. On the Main screen, configure game-wide Options and choose what your character should look like.
  2. On the Main screen, click New Game and then select one of the Scenario / Workshop / Custom Games tabs.
The left side of the screen now lists different templates for new worlds to choose from.
  3. When you create the new game, set World Settings that apply to each created world separately.

Scenarios tab[]

Scenarios are recommended for everyone and they make a great starting point for beginners. The default Scenarios are pre-made worlds with storylines or goals to achieve. They include many pre-built ships and bases that you can explore, modify, and learn before you jump into self-directed sandbox gameplay later. Play them on your own or together with 4 to 32 friends in online mode. Scenarios can range from linear singleplayer gameplay, to non-linear exploration stories, to multiplayer PvE/PvP challenges. The included scenarios were created mostly by Keen Software House and some by community members.

Custom Game tab[]

Custom Games are recommended for intermediate and experienced players. The list of Custom games on the Start Screen offers a variety of sandbox worlds to start in. Custom Games can be set among asteroids in space, on planets, or in a solar system full of asteroids, planets, and moons. Sandbox means there are no preset goals and you will build your own spaceships, rovers, and stations. You are free to customise the World Settings, add mods, add planets, and so on, to create a custom world that you want to challenge yourself with.

Workshop tab[]

The Steam Workshop offers countless worlds submitted by community members. Here you can find a wide array of challenging scenarios, worlds to explore, puzzles to solve, and battles to fight. Since many contain mods, they are generally recommended for experienced players. Read the descriptions to determine whether a community scenario is suitable for beginners.

Subscribe to a scenario in the Steam Workshop to have it appear on the Workshop tab. An example of a popular scenario is Escape from Mars.
